Artist Statement

My work focuses on the meaningfulness in ordinary moments. The beauty of common, transitory situations. I have always gravitated toward figurative painting. I love to watch people, especially when they are lost in thought or unaware of being observed. Their gestures and mannerisms are absolutely fascinating to me. My goal is to capture a typical moment through posture and prop, an emotion through color and composition.

For me, happiness is going into my studio, turning on music and mixing paint. Painting primarily in oil based artist mediums and house paints, I work on mid to large size canvases enjoying the physicality of the process almost as much as the actual outcome. Marrying colors, employing loose brushwork and playing with composition on a visceral level are the rewards for me. Spontaneity is paramount.

Lately, I have been working with vintage photographs. Some of my fondest memories are sifting through layers of old family photos with my grandmother. They are an imprint of the past, lost or forgotten memories; they have a compelling power to tell a story while also inviting the viewer to create scenarios of their own. The figures and landscapes evolve into new personas and atmospheres. My paintings are heavily layered and abstracted, much like our own memories. Occasionally, my models are actually myself playing the role of whomever it is I want to paint that day. When there is great light coming through a certain window or doorway I grab my wig, tripod and camera. I use these found, created and inherited images as a catalyst for my work.
